“I can’t imagine why anyone would not want to do it,” said Executive Director of MCPAWS, Amber Kostoff, about Idaho Gives. Every year hundreds of nonprofits participate in Idaho Gives, and every year hundreds of nonprofits showcase unique ways to raise funds the day of. Last year MCPAWS – a humane, no kill, animal shelter in McCall – raised over $13,000 during Idaho Gives. Kostoff shared her experience from years past.

On the day of Idaho Gives, Kostoff got together with other local nonprofits in the heart of McCall to set up booths that promoted and informed about their unique organizations. A puppy kissing booth was set up for folks to visit and possibly adopt available dogs.

Tax Reform Guidance: Will Charitable Giving Decrease in 2018?

We hear you: your greatest concern, as nonprofit leaders, is the potential shift in charitable giving, and I’m devoting the bulk of this column to that topic specifically.

The reform implications are multi-faceted: charitable giving, federal/state budgets, compliance, and taxation. There are changes in store. We are here to help you navigate them.

Before we dive into my optimistic views, I want to let you know that we are planning webinars, sharing resources, and creating a toolkit for you. All will cover aspects of the reform as information and resources become available to us. As soon as we have something to share, we will.

Now, onto the good news. I want to highlight a bright spot and lay out some strategies for you going forward.
History tells me that as far as the charitable giving issue is concerned, we don’t need to worry. That doesn’t mean we don’t need to take action or think about things differently, but I’m not worried and you shouldn’t be either.

Rugby Idaho Inc is passionately working towards making Idaho a national hotspot for Rugby. Started in 2009 as a means of providing opportunities for “athletes in first grade through high school to participate in rugby leagues, programs, and PE classrooms throughout Idaho” Rugby Idaho Inc has grown over the years.

They have since expanded to focus on coach education, that includes, “positive mentoring and annual classes for anti-bullying and hazing, as well as strengthening the state’s concussion awareness programs,” says Executive Director, Audrey Billingsley.

Where do We go from Here?

1/12/2018

Over the past year, we have been keeping an eye on the Johnson Amendment, the federal budget, and the most recently passed tax reform bill signed into law just before the holidays.

We are happy to report that the Johnson Amendment has been left alone (as of now). We will continue to monitor the status of this issue and will keep you informed of any new developments.

From our perspective, we did not support the tax bill because of the various unintended consequences of the reform - many of which may affect our nonprofit sector. We also made a valiant effort to encourage the addition of a universal charitable deduction.

Unfortunately - despite the efforts of hundreds of statewide nonprofit associations and local, state, and nationwide nonprofits - the universal charitable deduction did not make it into the final tax bill. We will continue to support and advocate for this change moving forward.
