Thank you to Donna Shines, Executive Director/CEO, for your continued partnership and service to the nonprofit community!

Q: How has your organization evolved over the years?

Our core beliefs have strengthened and we know two things for sure - 99% of kids who continue in our program graduate from high school AND 99% stay out of the juvenile justice system.
WE BELIEVE:
...that schools and communities can’t do it alone. The Mentoring Network was formed in 1999 by four counselors from four school districts that wanted to change the trend they were seeing of kids dropping out of school at younger and younger ages.
...that students with strong relationships in and out of school have higher psychological and physiological well-being and greater success in life.
...the Search Institute’s simple yet profound conclusion: “Nothing has more impact in the life of a child than positive relationships.”
...that all children deserve to build long term relationships with a listening, caring adult (mentor) by spending face-to-face time together on a regular basis.

Thank you to Elizabeth Lizberg, CEO/Executive Director, for your continued partnership and service to the nonprofit community!

Q: What does a typical week look like for your nonprofit?

Currently, our days are very different and full of opportunity. The challenges of the past year with COVID-19 has actually provided some unique opportunities for us to step back and get creative. We have taken a big leap of faith to direct our efforts towards hosting camp programs at our new facility, Hidden Paradise. We plan to use the camp this summer, which is two years ahead of our original plans. With that goal in sight, you can come in our office and witness everything from volunteers gathering to plan new activities in new spaces, the medical team discussing how we will stay safe, staff working to support our volunteer efforts and always…lots of laughter amongst the hard work.

What started out as a dream many years ago, Heart of Idaho Animal Sanctuary opened their facility 1.5 years ago in Challis, Idaho. Now that dream has become a reality and  Tirzah Stuart, Founder/CEO/Shelter Manager, says, “we are faced with many changes and circumstances that are both tragic and inspiring. We hope to build on our ideas every year as we strive to give the best life possible to our furry residents.”

In the short time they have been open, they have been able to expand their services. One of the most important practices of the Heart of Idaho Animal Sanctuary is ensuring that all animals are spayed/neutered before being placed in permanent homes, has become easier to do for animals at an earlier age, thanks to their veterinarian. Now the athey are able to advance their mission of population control and adopt pets out more quickly, both benefiting every facet of their organization.

Higher Ground Sun Valley (HGSV) has grown tremendously over the years. Since 1999, they have provided “recreation, therapy, and continuing support to give people of all abilities a better life.” Originally called Sun Valley Adaptive Sports, the Higher Ground brand has now expanded outside of Idaho to both California and New York.

After working 17 years as the Director of Recreation Programs, Cara Barrett has learned a great deal. “I have a difficult time saying ‘No’. I have learned over the years that it is OK to say no and to set boundaries,” Barrett says. She has also seen the organization increase from seven participants to over 100.
