Member Highlight: River Discovery

River Discovery offers outdoor adventures for cancer survivors that promote healing and strengthening of the mind, body and spirit. We work year round to create, build, and fund life changing outdoor adventures for cancer survivors and the people who love them. Programs are created to inspire, empower, and heal survivors of all ages and with any diagnosis.

Q: How has your organization evolved over the years?

"I have been the ED and sole contract employee since 2017. During that time I have been able to work with the board to build a savings (rainy day fund) that will secure our programs into the future as well as strengthen and grow our programs - adding value to our mission."

Q: What is one of the proudest accomplishments of your nonprofit?

​"As the ED I am most proud of the community recognition and reputation that River Discovery has built over the last few years."

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face day-to-day?

​"The ebbs and flows of the board's engagement and involvement in the day to day of the non-profit.  Each person gives what they can when they can but I do need more help and need to find some solid solutions to either engage them more directly or bring on another staff person."

Q: Is there something that surprised you about working for a nonprofit?

​"I get so much gratitude from our participants which is what drives me.  Being able to make a living doing this is more rewarding than I imagined when I started."

Q: What is your favorite part of INC membership?

"The interactions I have with other who are in my same position as a 'Nano'-nonprofit."
